I grew up in Westland Heights
where I married my grade school sweetheart, Kenneth,
in 1966, we settled down in this small neighborhood and raised
a family. I tell my grandchildren that growing up in Westland
Heights was not that much different than living in a rural community.
We lived next door to the church where Mom and Dad always made
sure my sisters and I went to Sunday school, and occasionally
Mom would come with us. When I was nine I walked the isle down
to the front of the church, grabbed the preachers hand, said
a few words, and was baptized. It seemed to start me on a journey.
In 1972, Kenneth and I attended
a James Robinson crusade held at Brewer High School, White Settlement,
Texas. It was at that time that God spoke to me about my salvation.
I began questioning my salvation and was wondering if I did truly
become a Christian. I tried to ignore God, but I soon realized
I wasnt saved. I knew what to do, but I was too embarrassed
to tell anyone. About a year later, during a revival at Westland
Heights Baptist Church, I asked Jesus into my heart and I gave
him my life. I was so excited. He gave me the courage to get
up out of that pew and walk down to the front of the church.
With Gods guidance I found it was much easier than I had
anticipated, and everyone was loving and waiting with open arms.
I was so excited I couldn't wait to be baptized again.
There were several of us who
gave our lives to Jesus during the revival, however, our church
was small and it did not have a baptistery. So like most small
churches, we gathered up and had a baptismal service down at
Benbrook Lake.
Over the years I have found many
who just walk the isle and say a few words. They need the assurance
of having true faith in Jesus. This is why I have worked in the
church most of my life and why today I am Sunday school superintendent.
I love children and youth, young adults and seniors; and I want
every one of them to come to know Jesus and to accept Him as
their savior.
